Tips for purchasing gutters for less in Maryland, Virginia and DC

Aside from picking a gutter contractor that you trust to get the work done right, there are many things you should consider when you purchase new gutters. Here are a few:

Gutters:
How do I know I am getting quality guttering?
Be sure that the gutter you are purchasing will be durable and lasting in shape and color, and comes with a warranty that proves it. We recommend aluminum 32 gauge seamless gutters and downspouts. These are thick enough to be durable in the event of hail or being hit by tree branches--and they won't bend if you lean a ladder against them to get to the roof.

Seamless gutters are key--seams often begin to leak over time. With a seamless gutter manufactured on site with a gutter truck, you'll get continuous runs of gutter so that there won't be glued or caulked seams in the middle. Also, if possible avoid getting new gutters that are hung with spikes. Spikes are likely to loosen over time causing your gutters to come down. We also do not recommend using vinyl or pvc guttering. We've been to so many homes where these have started to fail after just a few years.

What are some reasons to replace my gutters?

  1. Clogged or leaky gutters are one of the biggest causes of basement leaks, mold and other foundation problems. Also, standing water in gutters is one of the common places mosquitoes breed.
  2. Old worn out gutters look ugly and reduce the value of your property.
  3. Your old gutters may have become bent or dented or may be pulling away from your property in a manner that they cannot just be reattached or reworked.
  4. Your old seamed gutters may have begun to pull apart or have drippy leaks and you would like to replace them with modern seamless gutters which don't use the large spikes and farrels to hold them up. We use hidden hangers which screw to the joists of your roof in most situations. This is a superior way of attaching gutters to your home so that they stay up and don't droop over time.
  5. You want to change the color of your gutters.
  6. The drainage of your current guttering is not sufficient so you want to install a larger size gutter and downspout system. Most homes and commerical properties have 5 inch gutters with 2x3 downspouts, but we can install 6 inch gutters with 3x4 downs when necessary.

What is "fascia board"?

Fascia board is the the wooden board that sits behind your gutters. It protects your home and gives a square attachment point for the gutters. Often this wood can rot which will lead to problems--especially if your gutters are attached with spikes. Next Day Gutters can replace rotten fascia board with primed white pine or azek composite board. We can also wrap your fascia board with pvc coated aluminum to add beauty and help protect your home further.
